Reclaimed water uses

You can use reclaimed water for the following purposes:

  • Landscape irrigation
  • Irrigation of edible crops
    • Direct contact is allowed for crops that will be peeled, skinned, cooked or thermally processed before consumption
    • Indirect contact is allowed for crops that will not be peeled, skinned, cooked or thermally processed before consumption
  • Cooling water, wash water, or process water
  • Decorative pools, fountains, ponds, and other aesthetic features
  • Toilet flushing
  • Fire protection
  • Dust control at construction sites
  • Reuse applications such as washing
    • Vehicles
    • Roads
    • Sidewalks
    • Outdoor work areas
  • Mixing concrete

You can't use reclaimed water for:

  • Swimming pools
  • Hot tubs
  • Wading Pools

Requirements

  • If you have an irrigation system, you must install and maintain both a cut-off valve on the customer’s side of the service connection and an operable automatic rain sensing shut-off device
  • You must maintain your irrigation system in proper working condition and adjust sprinklers and timing schedule to preclude reclaimed water from pooling or draining onto adjacent properties, streets, storm sewers, or water bodies
  • We require a 75 foot separation distance between potable water well and reclaimed water spray area
  • Low trajectory nozzles are required for any areas irrigated by reclaimed water within 100 feet of public eating, drinking, or bathing facilities
  • You must install and maintain a reduced pressure principle backflow prevention device at points of connection where the your potable system is connected to the public potable water main

    • Signed reclaimed water service agreement
    • Authorization letter on company letterhead
    • Two copies of the service connection plan
  3. Email supplements and completed applications in PDF format to Paul Schaedler
  4. For single family residential requests about Reclaimed water please email the Utility at: waterdept@hcfl.gov

What's next

  1. We will review the package and contact you with the results
  2. If approved you should contact our 9-1-1 Administration, Streets and Addresses Department at (813) 744-5862 to obtain an address for the proposed reclaimed meter
  3. Apply for plumbing permit (813) 272-5600
  4. Initiate connection process
  5. Utility staff will schedule field activities to connect to the reclaimed water system
